How to play, the ribbon, gift tags, purchases and more.

Playing a board

How do I wrap a gift?

Every number on the board is a gift waiting to be wrapped. Drag your finger across the squares to draw a rectangle that holds exactly one number and covers exactly that many squares. Cover the whole board and the door is done.

I wrapped the wrong shape. How do I undo it?

Tap any wrapped gift to unwrap it. Nothing is lost; the ribbon comes back to the spool.

Why won't the board accept my rectangle?

A gift needs exactly one number inside it, must cover exactly that many squares, and can't overlap another gift. If the spool is short, the tag on your drag box turns red and you get a snowball to the face.

Can I come back to a board later?

Yes. Your progress on every board is saved on your phone the moment you make a move.

Ribbon

What is the ribbon for?

From door 8 on, every gift also spends ribbon equal to the distance around it. A long 1 by 6 strip uses 14 inches; a 2 by 3 block covers the same six squares for 10. Each board gives you one spool, so fat shapes are cheap and skinny shapes are dear.

Is every board solvable with the ribbon it gives?

Always. The spool is measured from a real solution to that exact board, so there is a way to wrap everything without running out. Finding the thrifty shapes is the puzzle.

What are the ribbon levels?

Doors 1 to 7 need no ribbon at all. Doors 8 to 16 are Cozy: a comfortable spool with a little slack. Doors 17 to 24 are Just Enough: the spool covers the solution and not an inch more.

The calendar

When do doors open?

One new door each day from December 1 to December 25. Past doors stay open, so a missed day is never lost. Future doors stay shut until their morning.

Is everyone playing the same board?

Yes. Each door is built from its date, so every player in the world gets the identical puzzle that day. Share your result and compare.

What happens before December?

The calendar counts down to door 1. Anyone can play three free sample boards, one each in December, Christmas in July, and Santa's Workshop colors. Santa's Workshop is open too: three free days for everyone, and a new board every day if you own any year's calendar.

What is Santa's Workshop?

Christmas all year round: a new board every day the calendar doors are resting, the same board for every player. With the doors, that makes a puzzle every day of the year. It comes with any calendar you own, at no extra cost, and it is open the day you buy. Not sure yet? Everyone gets three free Workshop days, counted by the days you play, so they never run out while the Workshop is resting. It rests while doors are open, December 1 to 25 and during Christmas in July, because the door is the day's puzzle then. One of the gifts hides the day's Elf Mail, a little note from the Workshop.

Why is Santa's Workshop closed today?

On door days the door is the day's puzzle, so the Workshop rests from December 1 to 25 and during Christmas in July. Your streak keeps going: the door counts for that day.

What is the streak?

The flame counts the days in a row you have finished the day's puzzle: the door on door days, the Santa's Workshop board on every other day. Catch-up doors count too, so a late start in December can still build a streak.

What is Christmas in July?

A free 12-door mini calendar that runs July 13 to 24 when it is switched on. Same game, summer colors.

The gift tag

What is hiding in my gifts?

After you finish a board, tap your gifts to tear them open. Most hide a little surprise. One carries a gift tag with a merry little message. Find it on your very first tear and it earns a candy cane.

What is the Gift Tags album?

Every gift tag you find behind a calendar door is kept in the album, 25 slots for 25 doors. A found tag wears its door's color, and a candy cane marks the ones you found on the first tear. Filling all 25 is the month's real prize.

Buying and restoring

What is free and what costs money?

Doors 1 to 5 of every calendar, three sample boards, three Santa's Workshop days, and Christmas in July are free. A calendar is a single purchase that opens its doors 6 through 25 for good. Owning any calendar also opens Santa's Workshop, so there is a puzzle every day of the year. No ads, no subscription, nothing renews.

I bought the calendar on another phone. How do I get it here?

Open More and tap Restore Purchases. Purchases follow the store account you bought with, so sign in to the same one first.

Does last year's calendar disappear?

No. On January 1 the app moves on to the new year, and every earlier year waits under Past Calendars with all its doors open, your progress, and its own Gift Tags. Each year's calendar is its own purchase and stays yours for good.

How do refunds work?

Purchases are handled by the app store you bought from, so refund requests go through that store, not through us. Details are on our refund page.

Reminders and sharing

Can the app remind me each day?

Yes. Turn on the daily door reminder in More for one nudge each December morning at 9. It is off until you switch it on, and you can turn it off any time.

What does Share send?

A short text card with your door, board size, ribbon to spare, and streak. It never shows the layout, so nothing is spoiled for friends who haven't played yet.

Privacy and contact

What do you collect about me?

Very little. There is no account, no sign-in, no ads and no tracking, and your progress lives on your phone and rides along in your normal device backup. When you buy a calendar, our purchase service keeps an anonymous record of it so you can restore it on a new phone. The app also sends us a few anonymous counts (app opens, boards solved, tags found) so we can tell what people enjoy; nothing in them can identify you. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I reach you?

Email [email protected]. We read everything.
